Jaime C. Montoya, MD, MSc.; Executive Director, PCHRD-DOST (Keynote Speaker)
(Reaching the Unserved and Underserved Through Research)

Dr. Jaime C. Montoya, the Executive Director of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCHRD-DOST) is a Public Health expert. He is a Professor of the Department of Medicine, University of the Philippines College of Medicine, a Consultant on the Infectious Diseases at the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center, and the Clinical Department, Research Institute of Tropical Medicine, Department of Health. He is an infectious Disease Specialist trained in Clinical Tropical Medicine at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and certified by the Royal College of Physicians, London, U.K. and the Philippine Board of Internal Medicine.  He had fellowships at international universities and fellow to local and international professional organizations including Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, and the Royal Institute of Doctors, Singapore.

He was awarded Outstanding Young Scientist of the Philippines award in 1998, Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines in 2001, 2007 Manuel L. Quezon Award, Distinguished Alumnus Award for 2010 of the U.P. System, and the first recipient of the National Academy of Science and Technology-Lino Ed Lim Educational Development Foundation Inc. Award in 2005, and first recipient of the prestigious Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Research given in May 2010. He was recently elected member of the National Academy of Science and Technology, which advices the President on national issues about science and technology, and was awarded the title of “Academician” in 2008.  For being an outstanding public official in the field of science and health, he was conferred the Presidential Lingkod Bayan Award by President Aquino in September 2012.


Adela Jamorabo Ruiz, DPA, PhD, RND (NDAP President)
(Good Governance in NDAP: Revisiting its Role and the Challenges in ASEAN 2015)

Dr. Ruiz is a full Professor [of Nutrition & Food Science, Public Administration and Education Management] at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines teaching in the undergraduate and graduate levels.  She was dean of three different Colleges - Hotel & Restaurant Management, Sciences, and Nutrition & Food Science prior to becoming Director of the Curriculum Planning and Development Office and current Director of the Quality Assurance Center.  Her education includes B.S. Foods & Nutrition (magna cum laude), dietetic internship diploma-Veterans Memorial Medical Center, M.S. Nutrition-University of the Philippines (Diliman) and doctoral studies in Educational Management, Public Administration and Psychology (major in Human Resource Management). She had 10 years hospital dietetics experience; an accreditor of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines and has presented researches at several Asian and International Congresses of Dietetics, Nutrition and Education. As a topnotch registered nutritionist-dietitian, mentor, author, administrator, researcher, book writer and nutrition educator, her enviable achievements earned recognition from various professional and academic organizations culminating in the Most Outstanding Professional award from the Professional Regulation Commission – the highest award for a professional in the Philippines.


Mario V. Capanzana, PhD
(Nutrition Research: Directions for the Future)

Dr. Capanzana is the current Director of the Food & Nutrition Research Institute. He graduated with a Chemical Engineering degree (cum laude) from the National University and obtained a Masters in Food Science from Mysore University, India. Through a scholarship he finished PhD in Food Science at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.  Fellow in Food Research (2003) of the Philippine Association of Nutrition. As a prolific researcher, Dr. Capanzana has presented various researches in seminars and conferences worldwide.  He also taught research courses in PUP, UPD and UST. He served as President of the Philippine Association of Nutrition in 2008-2009.


Felizardo N. Gatcheco, M.D., MSc, FPPS, FPSPGN
(Updates in Pediatric Nutrition: Focus on Zinc)

Dr. Gatcheco is a pediatric gastroenterologist and clinical epidemiologist.  He is Fellow of the Philippine Pediatric Society and a Diplomate of the Philippine Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (PSPGHN) and the Philippine representative to the International Council of the Asian Society for Pediatric Research.


Evangeline B. Handog, M.D., FPDS
(Nutricosmetics For The Mature Woman What Is True, What is Not)

Dr. Handog is a graduate of UST (magna cum laude) and trained as a dermatologist in Thailand, Japan and Australia.  She holds office at the Cosmetic Dermatology unit of the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and the Asian Hospital and Medical Center as Chair of the Department of Dermatology. She was Past-President, Philippine Society of Cutaneous Medicine (2 terms)

International and local lectureships on various topics: Cosmetic Dermatology, Acne, Pigmentary disorders, Mycology, Anti-aging, Geriatric Dermatology, Emerging Therapies, Psoriasis, Wound Healing, Atopic Dermatitis, Leprosy.


Nemencio A. Nicodemus Jr., M.D., FPCP, FPSEM
(Early Flavor Learning and Its Impact of Late Feeding Behavior)

Dr. Nicodemus is an Associate Professor, UP-College of Medicine Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Ateneo School of Medicine and Public Health and a Clinical Associate Professor, UP-PGH.  He is a Fellow of the Philippine College of Physicians and a Diplomate of the Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism.


Jesus Fernando B. Inciong, M.D. MSc.
(Clinical Nutrition Research: Directions for the Future)

Dr. Inciong is a Surgeon/Clinical Nutrition Specialist who is the Director, Weight Management Center at St. Luke’s Medical Center.  He Chairs the Committee on Critical Care and Surgical Nutrition of the Philippine College of Surgeons.  He is the Vice Chairman of the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines (NFP) and also serves as Acting NFP Executive Director.


Frances M. Tan, M.D.
The Widening Perspective of Gluten-Related Disorders)

Dr. Tan is an allergologist at the VRP Medical Center, EDSA Mandaluyong City where she is a member of the Pediatric Training Team and a Pediatric Allergologist at the Marikina Valley Medical Center.


Alonzo A. Gabriel, PhD
(Food Research: Directions for the Future)

Dr. Gabriel is an Associate Professor and University Scientist, Dept of Food Science and Nutrition, UP College of Home Economics. He obtained his BS Food Technology (2002) and MS Food Science (2007) at UP-Diliman and his PhD in Food Microbiology and Hygiene (2010) from Hiroshima University, Japan. Dr. Gabriel is a recipient of various awards: He was the Outstanding Young Scientist by the National Academy of Science & Technology in the field of Food Microbiology and Hygiene (July 2013); the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST) Young Scientist Excellence Awardee (November 2013) and The Outstanding Young Men (TOYM 2013) of the Philippines in Food Science and Technology (December 2013). He is also a food science and technology educator, researcher and community extension worker/ public servant. By waiving patents and proprietary rights to his research findings, Dr Gabriel’s works become readily available for use by the food industry, particularly by the micro and small scale enterprises that have limited R&D capabilities. He works with other government agencies such as the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Product Standards to disseminate key concepts and information in food safety, defense and security to farmers, fisher folks, and small scale food processors.


Engr. Rosemarie G. Garcia
(New Product Development of Some Nutritional Components Using Some Food Processing Wastes)

Engr. Garcia is a Senior Science Research Specialist at FNRI – DOST and heads the Technology Transfer and Commercialization Section of the Technology Diffusion and S&T Services Division. She is a graduate of Chemical Engineering and MS Food Science Technology as a DOST scholar.


Corazon VC. Barba, RND, PhD
(Public Health Nutrition Research: Directions for the Future)

Dr. Barba is Professor Emeritus of Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna.  She served as the Director of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute-Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) from March 1, 1998 to July 11, 2004.

Her education includes B.S. Nutrition (magna cum laude) - Philippine Women's University, MS Food Science - University of Hawaii, doctoral studies in Nutrition - Pennsylvania State University.

She was awarded the UPLB Distinguished Teacher Award for Biological Sciences in 1985, University of the Philippines System Outstanding Faculty Award in 1985, the 1990 Outstanding Nutritionist-Dietitian Award in Education and Research by the Nutritionist-Dietitian Association of the Philippines (NDAP), the Outstanding Nutritionist-Dietitian of the Year in 1994 from the Professional Regulations Commission, NDAP's Leadership in Nutrition and Dietetics Award in 1995, the San Miguel Corporation Professorial Chair in 1996, the Philippine Association of Nutrition Fellow for Nutrition Administration in 2002 and one of the Century Women in Health Sciences (1900-2000) in 2004.

Dr. Barba authored and co-authored technical articles and papers, and serves as contributor to magazines and popular publications.  She is the chairman of the ILSI-SEA RDA Harmonization Project and visiting lecturer at the SEAMEO-TROPMED RCCN, University of Indonesia and initiated the inception of the South East Asian Nutrition Leadership Program (SEA-NLP).  Dr. Barba served as President of the Nutritionist-Dietitians' Association of the Philippines and an Executive Trustee of the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines. Recently, she was awarded the Presentacion Perez Award, the highest honor bestowed by NDAP to outstanding leaders in Nutrition-Dietetics.


Florinda V. Panlilio, RND, MPH
(Nutrition in Emergencies)

Ms. Panlilio is newly promoted as Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator for Region III (Central Luzon) of the National Nutrition Council.  She was a Nutritionist-Dietitian IV in the Department of Health -Health Emergency Management Staff, which she joined in 2003. She used to train nutritionist-dietitians in relation to emergencies and disasters and the development of training modules for nutritional assessment and management during emergencies/disasters.


Chef Nancy Reyes-Lumen
(Foodservice Research: Trends and Issues)

Chef Nancy is a food journalist and Lifestyle columnist of the Philippine Daily Inquirer and a TV show host, being the Resident "Kusinera" of Unang Hirit. She obtained a Hotel & Restaurant Administration degree from UP College of Home Economics in 1974; Co-author of best selling The Adobo Book / The Malunggay Book / Make Good Money with Malunggay. (Note: These last two books are being awarded the World Gourmand Book for the Philippines and will compete with other world food books in May 2014). She is married to hotelman Roberto Lumen who is based in Houston Texas; has a son Chef Joey Herrera of ISCAHM; is the granddaughter of Engracia Reyes (founder of Aristocrat) who taught her cooking since age 9.  Nancy co-owns Life Verse Pasta - a little pasta store in CCF Church; busies herself as TV Cooking show host/ food show host/ cooking demonstrator and  Endorser: The Aristocrat/ Philips Home Appliances and is involved in various quests for self-enrichment in Filipino culinary culture / culinary cultural redemption of Filipino cuisine / and trends in food and beverage habits.


Maria Theresa M. Talavera, MSPH, RND
(Nutrition Labeling Updates: Consumer Preference and Effect on Food Choices)

Associate Professor Talavera is the Director of the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food, University of the Philippines Los Baños, Laguna and the Chair of the Technical Committee on Nutrition-Dietetics at the Commission on Higher Education.  She also served as Chair of the Council of Deans and Heads of Nutrition and Dietetics schools (CODHEND). She was initiated and honed in nutrition information and education and nutrition program management activities as Nutrition Officer at the National Nutrition Council (NNC). She then took post-graduate courses in 1992 and 1999, obtained her MS in Public Health (Major in Nutrition) at the University of the Philippines Manila (UPM) and then graduated (with distinction) from the University of Otago, New Zealand with a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Health. Shortly after, Ms. Talavera started teaching as Assistant Professor at IHNF, CHE, UPLB. Her passion for nutrition improvement in the communities and in the country continuously engages and fuels her pro-active involvement in several extension and research activities both local and abroad. Her appointments included: core staff in the Regional Training Program on Food and Nutrition Planning (RTP-FNP), member of the National Evaluation Team of the NNC, nutrition consultant for a World Bank and Asian Development Bank study, assistant project coordinator/leader and co-investigator for several projects including World Bank, United Nations Children's Fund, RTP-FNP and NNC programs and projects.
